St. Louis Living Arts School

A Small School with a Big Heart

St. Louis Living Arts School may be small, but it has a big heart and a tight-knit community that feels like a family. The school has a long-standing history of academic excellence and an innovative approach to education. The dedicated teachers offer students every opportunity to excel with highly targeted programming in both literacy and math. St. Louis Living Arts School also infuses the culture of the local First Nation and Metis communities by offering both Ojibway and French language classes.

Located in Keewatin, St. Louis Living Arts School thrives in the heart of this small community by actively engaging with its neighbours and families. St. Louis Church is just up the hill creating a close bond between students and the parish.
What Parents Say

“Hi, my name is Chrysti and my three daughters attend St. Louis School. I’m amazed every day at what my girls learn at school. St. Louis has so many exciting programs like the Lego Club, Nature Club and Dog-trick Club and my girls are excited to go to school every morning. The staff are incredible and meet your child where they’re at academically, socially and emotionally. They know each students’ name and always have you child’s best interest at heart.”

"Both my daughters Keira and Isabella go to St. Louis School. Our children love their school. On holidays, Keira actually counts down the hours until she goes back to school. There's such a variety of programming, Isabella can count to 10 in Ojibway, and both girls enjoy learning outside in the brand new Outdoor Learning Environment. Both my husband and I are so impressed with how St. Louis School promotes family activities that create memories and fosters the growth of children with independence, respect and kindness."

- April Ficek
"I'm a hockey mom and I'm delighted my two daughters are participating in St. Louis School's Hockey Skills Development Program. I love to see the smiles on ALL of the students' faces when they're on the ice. Many have never even played hockey before. It's great to see their skills develop while they're having a lot of fun. St. Louis School does it right."

Creativity Unleashed
St. Louis Living Arts School is known for being an arts and performance school including a musical that sells out every time and includes every child in the school. We have a rich variety of arts programs including choir, artists in residence and Junior Band in partnership with St. Thomas Aquinas High School.

The creativity continues in our Learning Commons where students work with technology and virtual reality to explore the world. Our dedicated MakerSpace gives students a hands-on opportunity to use their imagination to build anything they want out of the dozens of materials we provide.
Strong Academic Support

St. Louis Living Arts School is proud to offer strong programming that supports student success in academics. Our EMPOWER Reading Program helps gives students the tools they need to read. The Empower Reading program was introduced at St. Louis School in the 2017-2018 school year and was expanded due to its success to all elementary schools at Kenora Catholic beginning in the 2018-2019 school year. The program is offered to children in Grades 2-5. Children identified for the program are given extra reading time on a daily basis during regular class. All teachers offering the program are trained by certified instructors in order to ensure children participating in the program are experiencing the same benefits that were observed during research.

As part of a new focus from the Kenora Catholic District School Board we also offer a Math Support teacher to help both students and teachers in the instruction of math. The Math Support teacher works with our Numeracy Facilitator and are trained by renowned math instruction expert Dr. Marian Small. They help teachers in any way they can including intervention methods, finding new math games, diagnostic tools, and math lessons.

Rooted in Nature

Students at St. Louis School are learning about planting, animals, nature, photography, canning, beekeeping, composting and a wide variety of other topics from local community members through the school’s Down to Earth Nature Club. The club started in the spring of 2019, with sixty-two students signing up to be a part of it.

That excitement and enthusiasm for nature continues in the school’s updated outdoor learning space. The design, which was completed in 2018, brings in natural elements that can be used as play structures such as large boulders and wood logs that children love to walk along. The whole idea is to create a natural space where children can use their imagination to play.
